one year ago

head shot

I love the memories feature on Facebook, where you can see your past posts from the same calendar day. Yesterday I came across a selfie (showing off some new glasses) that I’d posted exactly one year ago.

Seeing this photo was strange. I looked kindly at that woman (who had already found a lump in her breast but hadn’t gone to the doctor yet), and I thought about what she didn’t know about the next 12 months of her life.

If I could go back in time and say anything to her, would I?

Part of me thinks, No. It might break her heart to hear about all the unhappy things she would experience.

But part of me thinks, Yes. Except what I would say is: You are going to handle the next twelve months with grace and courage. (Because I have.)

There will be times when you doubt that you have the strength to do the things you need to do. Trust yourself more.

Relax your deathgrip on the negative thoughts that are your biggest enemy. Practice kamai (aikido “easy readiness” stance) in everything you do.

Get more sleep. Enjoy the simple pleasures in each day.

You’ve got this.
